Introduction of Hebei University of Science and Technology
Located in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, with an area of 2,427 mu, Hebei University of Science and Technology (HEBUST) is formed from the merger of the former Hebei Institute of Engineering and Chemical Industry, Hebei Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Hebei Textile Workers College, and Hebei Textile Industry School. In 1956, higher education commenced in the university. Based on its operation in the years since its establishment, the mission of the university is commitment to the all-round development of talents and serving regional economic development and social progress. Adhering to the motto of the university “Maintaining Conscientiousness and Achieving Prosperity” and the HEBUST spirit of “Initiativeness, Collaboration, and Dedication”, the university cultivated over 300,000 outstanding graduates for the country. It is one of the first batch of key interdisciplinary backbone universities in Hebei Province, a university jointly built by the People’s Government of Hebei Province and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, PRC, a higher education institution for developing into a national first-class university with key support from Hebei Province, and a higher education institution under the “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program” of the Ministry of Education, PRC.
HEBUST has 21 teaching schools (and departments) and 63 majors at the undergraduate level, covering engineering, science, literature, economics, management, law, medicine, education, art and interdisciplinary. At present, it features 9 provincial key disciplines and 1 provincial key development discipline, with 1 discipline included in the World-class Discipline Construction Project in Hebei Province and 2 disciplines included in the National-class Discipline Construction Project in Hebei Province. HEBUST is in ESI Top 1% in four disciplines, namely Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science and Agriculture Science. It is currently authorized to offer doctoral programs in 2 first-level disciplines, master’s programs in 28, and professional master’s degrees in 18 categories. At present, it has more than 28,000 full-time undergraduates, postgraduates and international students, and more than 2,200 faculty members, including 1,040 holding senior professional titles. The university has 17 national outstanding talents, 162 provincial and ministerial-level talents and 26 provincial-level teaching master.
HEBUST has successively won 1 second prize of national teaching achievements and 66 provincial teaching achievement awards, with 29 projects approved to be included in the national “Undergraduate Teaching Quality and Teaching Reform Project”, and 2 projects selected for the first batch of modern industrial institute construction projects. It has seen 5 of its majors included in the pilot majors of “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program” and 9 of its majors passed the professional certification of engineering education in China, in addition to 13 included in the national first-class major development site list for undergraduates, 25 included in the provincial first-class major development site list for undergraduates. Moreover, 14 majors are selected for the provincial key development majors, and 2 majors are listed as the Hebei provincial application-based transformation demonstration majors. At the same time, HEBUST has 9 curricula recognized as national first-class curricula for undergraduates, and 56 curricula recognized as provincial first-class curricula for undergraduates. In the National Discipline Competition Rankings for Colleges and Universities in 2024, it ranked 70th in the country and 2nd in Hebei Province. HEBUST has been rated as a national university with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship and a national demonstration university in deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. HEBUST ranks top among the universities of Hebei province in terms of the accomplishment of graduate employment. It has cultivated outstanding graduates such as Han Buxing and Chen Guang, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Ren Hongqiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. And it has been selected as China’s top 100 Universities for Richest Alumni for many years.
HEBUST has won 1 second prize of the national science and technology progress award and 1 second prize for technological invention of national higher education institutions. As to prizes at the provincial and ministerial level, it has won over 210 science and technology awards, including 15 first prizes and 67 second prizes. The university has undertaken major national projects, including the National Science and Technology Major Projects, the National Key Research and Development Programs, and the Joint Fund Integration Project of the National Natural Science Foundation. It owns 1 national scientific research platform, National Engineering Research Center of VOCs and Odor Pollution Control Technology, and 39 scientific research platforms at provincial and ministerial levels.
As a “National Technology Transfer Demonstration Institution”, the university hosts provincial and municipal intellectual property training bases and operation service platforms and has led the establishment of the Intellectual Property Application Alliance Among Universities in Hebei. It is among the first batch of “Scientific and Technological Achievements Output Base” in Hebei Province. A provincial-level Science and Technology Commissioner Studio has been approved and established at the university. It established 10 county-level science and technology commissioner teams for the industrial development of Hebei Province and dispatched more than 2,000 persons as special scientific commissioners at provincial and municipal levels. HEBUST has established industry-university-research collaboration partnerships with over 1,800 local governments, industry associations, enterprises, and public institutions and has registered more than 3,700 patents of various types. The Journal of Hebei University of Science and Technology is listed as Peking University Chinese Core Journals.
HEBUST has carried out exchanges and cooperation with 180 universities and research institutions in 49 countries and regions, and currently has 1 Sino-Foreign cooperative educational institution and 5 Sino-Foreign cooperative educational projects. It has nearly 41 projects approved at national and provincial levels, including the science and technology cooperation projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, international science and technology cooperation base, and workstations of foreign academicians. It has offered 15 English-taught majors and enrolled international undergraduate and graduate students from over 40 countries and regions. The university has been approved as a recipient institution of the International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship and named a “Gold Partner for Chinese Language Alliance Digitalized Education”.
The year 2025 marks a crucial period for thoroughly implementing the spirit of the National Education Conference and advancing the comprehensive implementation of the outline for building a leading country in education at a higher level. It is also a pivotal year for the university to successfully conclude the 14th Five-Year Plan and scientifically formulate the 15th Five-Year Plan. Guided by the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the university will remain committed to its founding mission of educating students for the Party and cultivating talents for the country. Centering on the fundamental task of fostering virtue and nurturing talent, it will continue to deepen the integrated reform of systems and mechanisms for education, technology, and talent development. These efforts aim to advance the high-quality development of a distinctive and nationally first-class university, thereby making new and greater contributions to writing the Hebei chapter of Chinese-style modernization.
